Is it bad to not go to college until a year after high school?

i want to go to college at LSU but i'm afraid i won't have enough money by the time high school is over. i also won't be able to pay the out of state tuition. i was thinking of moving to louisiana and living there for a year while working to save up money but also being able to get an in state tuition. my dad told me colleges dont like when you take a year off from your education. is this true or does my dad not even know what he is saying? also does anyone know if people in louisiana like people from the north, specificaly chicago (the suburbs)? i'm afraid that they wont like me because i dont practice a religion and i'm also a democrat, or have i been hearing too many stereo types? i really like louisiana i think thier way of life is way better not too bash anyone from the north but i've lived here my whole life and i'm pretty sick of it.
