How do I install a patch update for a game on xbox 360?

Just bought ncaa 11 (yeah I know ncaa 12 is coming out...) but I found out there were some major flaws that were fixed in patch updates. I have never updated a game before. Do I need an xbox live membership? Do I need to connect to a laptop? Any help is appreciated.
